Not-Back-To-School Blog Hop Post

As you have already heard me whine about, I'm sure, we aren't officially starting school until we move and get settled in a new place (and at this point, I have NO idea when that will be!).  But, I got antsy, and decided we have to start SOMETHING before I go nuts!  And the kids are getting kinda funky, too, so I feel they need a little more structure in their day on a regular basis.  Preston finished up his Rod & Staff Health and Manners workbook on Friday (here's hoping he retains some of those manners, sheesh!), and I told him that we'd be starting some school on Monday.  He didn't groan or complain, and first thing Monday morning he woke me up and said, "Let's do school!"  So, I think that means he's ready.  Lol.

Going along with iHomeschoolNetwork.com's Blog Hop (which is really supposed to be a 4-week-long thing, and I crammed into one post because, again, we're un-officially starting, lol), here is an update on Clark Family Academy...

Curriculum:
For Preston, my 3rd-Grader, we will be using My Father's World Exploring Countries and Cultures, BUT because I don't have the ability to pull out all of the stuff and put maps up and all that (thanks to our beautifully staged home right now), I decided to start with the subjects that don't require many supplies.
Preston's curriculum
We are doing Spelling Power, according to the MFW ECC instructions.  We did the survey and spelling test and Preston gets to start with Level C.  He was pretty pumped about not having to start at the beginning.  The Justice League notebook is where he does his writing.  And we are starting up Grade 3-A in Math Mammoth on the iPad.  I was not looking forward to having to print out all of the pages in the two workbooks this year, then the amazing Amanda Pelser posted a tutorial on how to do worksheets on the iPad (and her example was even using Grade 3-A of Math Mammoth, um... yeah!).  So, no more spending tons of money/ink trying to print out everything, AND Preston enjoys getting to use the iPad, of course!

My preschooler, Callen, and I will be doing Before Five in a Row... at some point.  I have lent most of the books for that curriculum to a friend doing it with her kiddos, and since we're not ready to truly start, haven't asked for them back.
Callen's curriculum
So, for now, Callen will be doodling in his Planes notebook, and creating letters (print outs from COAH) with his Wooden Pattern Blocks.  He'll also be running around like a banshee, and getting into trouble.  That's just what he does.  I'll be finding other things to do with him/occupy him as we go.

School Room:
Welp... I was really hoping to be settled into a new place that has a nice area that we can set up "school."  It's certainly something on top of my 'want' list when we look at houses.  But, for now, our supplies/books are stashed away deep in my closet.  I was able to dig out what we needed and find a place to have it easily on hand but mostly hidden as well.
Just a few books for now!
The books are tucked away in a corner of our kitchen hutch, close to the kitchen table.  That way when potential buyers come in for a showing, they can still see our beautiful kitchen and not be distracted by a ton of school stuff all over the place.

Our staged kitchen, photograph from our listing.
Student Photo:
Ok, obviously I haven't done much with this.  But here are my two dudes hard at work on Monday...
Doing work just before dinner.
Day In the Life:
Our first day (yesterday) went a little something like this... Preston woke me up excited to get started.  So, before Callen woke up and demanded breakfast, we got to work on the Spelling Power Survey and Placement test to see where we start in that big 'ole book!  I read through the list of words, Preston spelled to me, and I wrote them down.  Now, I told him that would NOT be the norm, because even though he hates to write and complains about it constantly, he HAS to do it.  But, since we had to get through a bunch of words and I needed him to concentrate on actually spelling, I knew it'd go smoother if I did the writing.  And it did.  He did great!  After that, Callen woke up... we did breakfast, tidied the house, ran out for a few errands, came back for lunch, Preston hurt himself*, headed out to the chiropractor, came back, Daddy came home, we ALL took naps, woke up, did some more school (what you see them doing in the picture above, Preston doing math and Callen "writing" in his notebook), dinner, then off again to a children's ministry meeting, back home, tidy up some more, kids watched a tv show with dad, bath, bed.  Whew!  Certainly made for a full day.  Obviously, not all our days are that packed with go-go-go!  Thank goodness!
Building the capital 'V'.

Spelling words daily test.

* My darling sons came out of Preston's room while I was doing some work and were both clothed in at least 10 shirts each.  They had decided to make themselves fat by putting on as many layers of shirts as they could.  Well, when Preston went to take his off, he pulled really hard and it yanked his head back really far.  He said he heart a crack, and he began to freak out.  I went running and found him, with his neck twisted one way and he said that if he moved anything it hurt really bad.  When he tried to show me, he cried.  Poor kid!  I put ice on it and finished up what I was doing.  It was totally a God thing, because I was doing some ironing for a friend who is a chiropractor... so we ran up to her office to take it back and I asked if instead of paying me, she'd help Preston's neck and, of course, she did.  She worked on him a little and he was able to move a ton more than before, so praise God for that.  In the picture above, he is doing his work with an ice pack on... having to do that periodically to help him heal.  Never a dull moment around here, for sure!

Coffee Mug Swap 2012

I joined up on Cook Family Chronicles for a fun coffee mug swap last month.  I love coffee, and I greatly enjoy fun or pretty coffee mugs too!  This swap was perfect for me!  Lol.

I was paired up with Monika from The Little Backyard Farm in Illinois.  She checked out my blog and saw that I am slightly obsessed with pumpkins and Fall (what? how could she tell?!?  hahahaha!).  Anyway, she sent me this adorable coffee mug featuring a flower and butterfly and some yummy Pumpkin Quick Bread Mix!  And check out the gorgeous card she sent as well!  I was a little bummed that the coffee mug got chipped right on the rim while in transit, but I was able to superglue it mostly back together (along with some of my finger, oops!) and now it's sitting on one of my high shelves so I can still marvel at it's beauty!

What a fantastic package to open!  Love it all!
You can see Monika's post about the mug she received from me here on her blog.  And you can also check out the rest of the Swap Posts from Cook Family Chronicles here.  Such fun mugs!!!  Loved this.  Thanks, Heather!!!

Our 2012-2013 School Room

Our "school room" is in our kitchen.  Our house is just too small to have our stuff anywhere else, and it works well for us.  Yes, I drool over other people's rooms dedicated solely to "school" (or at least store and organizer their stuff!) but I TRY not to covet too much.  God has blessed me with the opportunity to be doing this, and we can learn ANYWHERE!

We do the majority of our work at the kitchen table, followed by the desk in the bedroom where the computer is, and, of course, the couch and living room floor.  And sometimes the van.  But, yes, the kitchen table is our main focus point.  My husband is awesome (he was completely homeschooled, so he understands) and has allowed me to "decorate" the walls of our kitchen with school stuff.  We have our workboxes, posters, timeline, art showcase and supplies all over the place in there, and it's a cluttered mess... but it works.  We have books and supplies also stored in my closet and in Preston's closet!

Some pictures of our "school room":

Boy Mom Blog Hop 2012!

I'm linking up with The M.O.B. Society and their Boy Mom Blog Hop!
Me and my boys!
Howdy, from Grand Prairie, Texas! I am Jade, Boy Mom to Preston (6) and Callen (2) and wife to Michael (we've been married for 10 years now!).  We are a Christian, homeschooling family and my blog here reflects that... it is normally a mix of crazy things my kids do or say and posts on homeschooling with the occasional rant or rave about something or other.  I've been blogging for a long time.  I find it a fun way to look back on things we've done, gone through or accomplished in our lives.  I started this blog in 2010 after Callen was born and I became a stay-at-home-mom.  I formally worked in radio for about 9 years, and I still do off and on.  I know also work from home as an Independent Educational Consultant with Usborne Books & More. My boys enjoy helping me with my business - reading books, telling others about books... anything to do with books!

This captures them perfectly.
I love being a Boy Mom... my boys are full of energy, inquisitiveness and hilarity.  While they drive me completely bonkers on a daily basis, I wouldn't have it any other way!  Preston is too smart for his own good, always using big words and proving me wrong about this and that.  He's also rather sensitive and emotional for a young boy.  Callen is my Tasmanian Devil... just sheer chaos!  You literally cannot leave him alone for 30-seconds before he is into trouble!  But his little toddler babble "I love you, mama!" can instantly melt my heart just the same.  They make me want to be a better person... I am definitely working hard at patience and gentleness as we continue to grow together.  And, well, I need a lot of work on the other Fruits of the Spirit while I'm at it.  And so do they, lol!

Our favorite things to do are read aloud together, work puzzles, play ball (all kinds!), run around in the backyard and just generally be silly!

Thanks for stopping by my blog, please feel free to click around, visit various areas and leave me a comment or two!  Blessings!

Homeschool Recap, Dec 16th (Wk 14)...

In my life this week...
Everyone in the house was sickly this week.  Not fun.  I think it was just a round of colds... lots of snot, coughing and gunky throats.  We seem to be on the mend, but there's still lots of tissue use going on 'round here.  We haven't been doing anything too exciting.  Listening to Christmas music, watching Christmas movies, and just taking it easy.

My favorite thing this week was...
Oh, before all the sickness hit, on Saturday (my birthday!), we went out to a ranch and had the best time!  The boys really enjoyed being cowboys!  We did a hayride, ate the most delicious chicken from a giant smoker, Callen got to sit on a "neigghh!".  So much fun!
My cowboys!
What's NOT working for me...
Still waiting for the part for my laptop to come in.  Hoping it'll be here soon and will be the fix for it.  If not... I don't even know.

I'm reading...
Well, besides all the Christmas books, I picked back up with Anne of Green Gables.  Well, technically, I moved on to Anne of Avonlea.  Can't wait to see what Anne gets herself into next!

I'm grateful for...
A Savior who blesses us, even when we grumble and are ungrateful!  The Lord is constantly providing for us in so many different ways.  What right have I to complain about anything?  ANYTHING?!?!?  Sometimes I'm a real jerk, even when it's just inside my own head.  Forgive me, Father, for questioning, doubting, complaining and just generally being a butt.  Amen.

Ahem, anyway...

In our homeschool this week...
Tot School:  Callen is enjoying Christmastime.  When asked what Santa says, he replies, "oh! oh! oh!"  And when I ask where Baby Jesus is, he points to our nativity scene.  He has also decided he likes the song "We Wish You A Merry Christmas," as he says 'WISSS!"  It's terribly cute!  He is about to climb out of his crib at any moment, so I am constantly on alert.  We are in the process of getting Preston a twin bed to move in to, so we can give Preston's toddler bed to Callen.  They grow up too fast!  Callen is still very interested in coloring and enjoys doing the Advent to Color every day.  Don't you dare leave him out!  Lol.  And, my goodness, does that boy love our Christmas tree...  Eep!
Come out from behind there!
Bible: Proverbs 30:5, "Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him."  And we discussed, read and illustrated Noah and the Ark, God's promise, The Tower of Babel and started talking about Abram.  The boys had a great time trying to build their own Tall Tower with blocks.  Preston got it just as tall as he was before it toppled.
Working on our towers!
After two more blocks, it fell!
Reading/Writing: Spent time working on writing words we were reading in our Bible stories, talked about "ew" and "ea."

Math: This week's theme was charts and graphs, something Preston is very familiar with.  Did the pages in the Complete Book of Math on the subject, and continued to fill in his Weather Chart (we do a new one every month to keep track of the weather - at the end of the school year, we'll make a large chart using all the months' info!).  We also read Lemonade for Sale, which talks about graphs.

Science: This week's science them was Rainbows, which went nicely with the story of Noah and the Ark, of course.  We watched a Cat In the Hat episode about learning the order of the colors, and he already knew Roy G. Biv.  He colored in some rainbows, and we made rainbows using a glass of water and flashlight (since it was cloudy all week and we couldn't use the sun!).  We also read a cute little book called Skyfire.

Music/Art:  This week's hymn was "How Firm a Foundation", and there were many new vocabulary words in this one to learn!  He liked it, though.  We also talked about chimes/tubular bells and the xylophone.  We looked at a landscape portrait from our Come Look With Me book.  We didn't do Drawing with Children this week, we just weren't feeling up to it.  Tried to lighten the load a bit.

Spanish:  We skipped Spanish lessons this week too.  Might try to get in some review this week and next, and not introduce anything new.  He's getting a bit mixed up with the last few weeks' words.  Probably a good time for a break with this anyway.

Advent/Seasonal activity: Our first full week of doing the Names of Jesus Countdown Chain from Spell Out Loud.  Each day we take off a chain link, learn about that particular name for Jesus, color an ornament from here and put it up on our tree branch.  Preston is also doing the Advent Calendar to Color from Usborne each day as well.  Callen wanted in on the action this time around, and has lovingly scribbled his additions to the Calendar.  But that makes it all the more special.  =)

We are using My Father's World First Grade. See our curriculum here.

Homeschool Recap, Sept 30th (Wk 4)

In my life this week...
It was another busy week for us.  I guess I should probably just stop saying that, 'cause life is just busy for everyone in general, right?  I had several Usborne things and random appointments.  Preston had a dentist check up and everything looked great, praise the Lord!

Places we're going and people we're seeing...
Last Saturday, we participated in the Walk for a Cure JRDF benefit.  It was so fun, and a lot easier than I expected.  Lol!  I've never done one of those things and I couldn't quite wrap my head around 5K... now I can, and I'd love to do it again some time!  Wednesday evening we spent with some friends, one from out of town, and got to meet her precious baby!  He is 6-months old and weighs the same as Callen, who's 18 months old!  I really do need to get my baby on Pedia-sure!!!  Haha.  It was nice to catch up with them!  Then on Thursday, I did an Usborne party at another friends' house and I had a great time getting to show them our books.  Preston had a blast playing with their 4-yr-old.  And today we've got a playdate with our homeschool group and we're having some people over for an Usborne/Scentsy party.  Pretty excited about getting to see so many people lately... I've been missing people like crazy!
After the walk on Saturday.
Praying for...
Guidance.  In many forms.
Also, it's kinda silly, but I really want to meet my Success Bound goal for Usborne by my cut-off at 10am on Monday.  It means a lot to me and will greatly help our team - and I'm close, but I need a few more retail sales to get me there.  Praying that some of the people who said they'd purchase books, really will, and soon!!!  I had three parties scheduled for this week, one cancelled and another had no guests, so.... yeah.  Definitely praying God moves some people!  Lol.

In our homeschool this week...
Tot school:  Haha, yeah, right.
Bible: Talked about how the Bible is made up of 66 little books in one Big Book. We also read more stories from our Hands-On Bible. Memorized Proverbs 23:12: "Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge."  Really proud of Preston, he is doing so great with the memorizing... he can tell me this one along with the previous two with only a little prompting!

Reading/Writing: Worked on more short vowel sounds: e, i, o and u.
MFW workbook & blocks!
Math:  This week's theme was counting.  Something Preston rolled his eyes at me about, of course.  Lol.  But the books we read were fun (see widget below) and the pages from Complete Book of Math were super easy for him, so we breezed right through it.
Working together!
Science:  We talked about how flowers grow.  We started an avocado seed on Sunday.  So far all it's done is start splitting in two, and I think we can see the beginnings of a root growing out.  We'll definitely be keeping an eye on it for a while.  We attempted the flower dye experiment (went out and gathered petals from a bright pink bush, added some water and kneaded it to try to get a pinkish dye... kind of a bust).  Read some more fun flower and plant books, including one of our new Usborne books, How Flowers Grow.

Art/Music: We practiced using the 5 elements of drawing and drew some random lines, circles, dots, etc. I also showed Preston a portrait by Goya and we talked about what the little boy in the painting was thinking, why it was so dark, etc. We talked about piccolos and flutes and I showed Preston some youtube videos of people playing some popular tunes on these instruments. We were highly impressed with this one:

Spanish:  Still working on numbers 1-20.  He's growing tired of it, so we're moving on next week instead of spending another week on it.  The book moves up to counting in 10's to 100, but I think we'll stick with 1-20 for now and move on to the Spanish Alphabet next week.

Books we used this week in addition to our curriculum:

We are using My Father's World First Grade. See our curriculum here.
